Week 3: Summary- and looking ahead

I hope that everyone had a wonderful Labor Day weekend and week back from the holiday. This week we played catch-up in science after having library and counselor during the afternoon. Today was our last day studying the moon and the students built a model of the moon phase cycle using oreos.

The students were able to learn about the library check out process but time ran out before they could go check out books, so that is what is on the agenda for their next visit.

Next week we will be looking at the following:

Reading: Biographies. What are they? How are the different from other literary genres? We will finish immersing ourselves this week in the genre. They have already started to identify the differences between biographies and autobiographies. We will also pick up Work on Writing and Word Work as stations this next week during guided reading time.

Writing: Quick publish of a writing piece. We have enjoyed writing stories and sharing them this past week and will now choose one to take through the full writing process. We will revise, edit, and publish.

Math: Subtraction strategies. This is the last week we will be working on the strategies for basic recall of addition and subtraction facts. By week 5 we will be starting place value. This can be a tricky spot for students, so keep an eye out for practice pages they may bring home.

Social Studies: We will be working on map skills.

Keep an eye out for my next post about my homework policy.

Thank you!
